The fragility of the Black male body

With Pina, the South African dancer Kwanele Finch Thusi is building a new mythology of Black and queer bodies and identities. Seeing this masculinity primarily as being strong, powerful and masculine, by confirming and showing the vulnerability and gentleness of the male body. For Kwanele Thusi, his own black queer identity is the starting point for all his work.

Pina is based on stories of old and young black men and the power of expression and movement in telling their stories. In Pina, Finch dissects the image that exists in society and in language about a Black male identity and the Black body. Language and body movement mean that a black body is especially strong and physical. Kwanele Thusi decolonizes the image of the Black male body and shows in his solo and duet that a Black body and a Black identity can also be soft and vulnerable. His PINA is a CRY, A SCREAM, a queer response to the canonized historical image of the Black male body.

PINA calls for a reconsideration around prehistoric implications that still subject the black person as "less than, inadequate, and feared." As black people, our bodies are still seen as exotic exhibits for freedom.

“In the discourse, black bodies are detextualized, recognized as urgent beings in their own right, but also as beings that exist in a complex system of others. And as such, the work helps us to regain knowledge about black body perceptions. find, showing how these bodies were conceived through settler frames and reconstructed to generate knowledge about the contemporary black body moving it into positions of lack of confidence, fear, and concern".

Within these parameters, the black body is seen through the eyes of pain and trauma. I ask the complicated questions in this work, what do you see when you look at me? With so many conflicts emerging in 2020 and 2021, the Black Live Matter movement underpinned the need and purpose of this work.
