What is Artivism?

** Performative studies by artists and activists
An initiative of Afrovibes, Dancing on the Edge & Podium Mozaïek**

In the simplest explanation, artivism connects 'art' with 'activism'. But if you then try to imagine what that art looks like and how it distinguishes itself from other art forms, it becomes more difficult.

Based on some online research, we found artivism projects to be characterized by new forms of political intervention, they are of a rebellious, disobedient nature and often take place outside the usual art platforms: which are public spaces, close to our daily reality. It is the malfunctions in this daily reality that the responsible artists want to change, not only just represent or comment on.

In two performative studies, foreign artists associated with Afrovibes and Dancing on the Edge help us further in what artivism can be and what it can achieve. They share their comments, tell about their experiences and show their projects, alternated with short performances, workshops and participatory interventions.

** What is Artivism? # 1

With Jay Pather (ZA), Qudus Onikeku (NG), Thania Peterson (ZA / UK), [Gabrielle Goliath](https: // (ZA), Mzo Gasa (ZA) and others, we focus questions as:

What is artivism? What impact can it have? And how does artivism relate to the public, participants or citizens?
